If you’re a true-born Kingstonian, you probably remember the days when the Mariner’s Harbor building was home to the Daily Freeman.

Back in the day, lower Broadway was the hub of this great city. Rondout Savings Bank was nearby. So was B & F Market, the post office, the Orpheum Theater, the shoe-shine shop, the five-and-dime store and Rookie’s Tavern on the Strand.

Today when you visit the restaurant, you’ll come in through a corner door. Above it hangs a sculpted swordfish. Back in the day, the double doors leading into the Freeman were on the lower Broadway side.

For over 40 years, the Savona family has been proudly serving authentic Italian dishes to their neighbors in the Hudson Valley. The origins of these dishes date back several generations to “Villa Batte” – a small village on the Island of Sicily. These recipes were in the back pocket of original founder Emanuel Savona, when he crossed the Atlantic Ocean nearly 50 years ago in search of a better life. Years later he and wife Cecilia would take their new family out of Brooklyn north in search of a better place to raise their four children. “Manny & Ceil” (as people came to know them) opened their first Italian Restaurant on Albany Ave. in the City of Kingston in 1972.

Now in its’ second generation, Stephen Savona continues his family’s tradition of serving only the highest quality Italian dishes using the freshest ingredients available – whether in-house or for your catered event.

Ship to Shore

Ship to Shore’s philosophy – keep it simple, keep it fresh, keep it local.

Ship to Shore was opened in 1998 and Chef/Owner Samir Hrichi has carefully selected ingredients indigenous to the Hudson Valley by researching and using local vendors and farming establishments. At its core, Ship to Shore is a take on an American Bistro with the big, bold flavors of the Mediterranean and Asia paired with a NYC style Steakhouse. With the Hudson Valley as its backdrop, Ship to Shore has grown in its merits as a culinary staple in the upstate food scene, as well as a popular catering and event company.

Ship to Shore is located in the middle of a growing and transformative waterfront community affectionately known as “The Strand” to the locals. The Historic Kingston Waterfront is full of history that dates back to the British invading the Kingston area in 1777 using the waterway channel that maritime boats casually cruise down today. The waterfront district is increasingly growing as a culinary staple in the Hudson Valley food scene, and Ship to Shore became a piece of the beautiful waterfront in 1998 and has transformed with the ever-evolving community. Seasonal festivals, the beautiful paved waterfront walkway, boating docks that line the path, restaurant, shops, and art galleries help create a very special place in Kingston, NY.

Half Moon Rondout Cafe

Their petite donuts are not only super-fresh and hot when you buy them, but also feather-light. According to owner John Pinna, the recipe for the dough dates back to the French and Indian War in 1757: General Montcalm brought a French chef along when he took possession of Fort William Henry from the English.

Half Moon also offers raspberry crumbcake and exquisite chocolate babka, available by the slice or a whole loaf.

Half Moon is also a coffeeshop. You can get your java any way you like it here, including espresso. The delicious house blend is a dark roast from Seattle by way of Brooklyn. You can also get chai, Turkish tea hot or cold from a samovar, freshly made lemonade from an urn with lemon wedges floating in it.

The front of the shop features a sunny space with a long wooden bench for sitting and a counter displaying its wares. Antique bakery contraptions, such as a dough divider manufactured in Fishkill, are arrayed around the perimeter. Above the white-painted wainscoting, the walls are festooned with a fascinating array of framed images, many of them historical photographs with connections to the Hudson Valley.

The rear of the shop is the inner sanctum, the mad scientists’ laboratory where owners John Pinna and Kaira Tiegen make donuts to order. Their automated 1950s contraption, called a Donut Robot 42, can crank out a single donut in a minute-and-a-half, a dozen in less than four minutes.
